About

‘I would urge you to keep an eye on this group of talented artists,
as they…put East Grinstead on the art map of Britain’

John Pye for the East Grinstead Observer

Example is a contemporary art group based in East Grinstead. We aim to bring high quality contemporary art to Sussex using traditional gallery settings and non-conventional spaces. We meet regularly to exchange ideas and support one another’s creative ventures. Our members represent varied art forms and are artists at different stages of their careers.

Past projects include a giant subway community art work, an Arts Council England supported artist trail, Big Draw events, a museum partnership and school workshops.

OUR BEGINNINGS

In 2011 a number of experienced contemporary artists met on a ‘blind date’ at Chequer Mead to see if they were compatible. They quickly recognised in one another an irrepressible need to make art, as well as a loyalty to our beautiful, quirky and sometimes under-appreciated town and its surroundings. The group quickly established a core membership, meeting regularly to exchange ideas and support one another’s creative ventures.

‘We are Example’, the inaugural exhibition in May 2012, launched the group to the public, showcasing the versatility of the artists in a wide range of media, including experimental and traditional printmaking, dynamic sculpture, evocative gestural painting, unsettling textiles and drawings in stitch.

Example meets regularly to discuss current art projects within the group, with a view to encouraging and sharing ideas. Please see the Exhibition page for our next show.
