Malcolm

MALCOLM GLOVER

Malcolm Glover uses digital technology to produce large-scale photographs. He is portraying 25 streets throughout Britain, and has photographed the Bluebell Railway site at 45-minute intervals throughout the day, to show not only the external life of the platform but also the gradual light changes from day to late afternoon.

“The town holds many happy memories for me and played a huge part in my life as youngster growing up in the area.”

 

ANDY WEBB

Andy Webb exhibits a new piece, taking inspiration from the heritage and industry of the railways. He has had access ‘behind the scenes’ at the Bluebell railway, which informs the work.

ANDY WEBB

Andy Webb is interested in traditional ideas for sculpture such as juxtaposition of shape and form in space. For Townscape, he is taking inspiration from the heritage and ironwork of the railways.
The sculptor is interested in totemic forms; work that seems to move upwards to something better, maybe providing a gateway to the heavens! He works in steel, bronze and stainless steel.

SUSAN DODDS

Susan Dodds is a printmaker. She has produced a series of lino prints, exhibited in selected cafes near the station quarter, inspired by eating and drinking.
“I decided to look at East Grinstead’s history in the simplest of terms, in fact through the development of eating implements. This involved my visiting a number of small local museums to look for information.”

Annie Burrows presents a series of new drawings.
“I want to communicate my response to the rocks at Stone Farm using an extended drawing process. My images are often created from fragments allowing the figurative to move to abstraction and back again; creating a space for the viewer to bring their own response to the work.”

SHERI GEE

Sheri Gee is completely captivated by people, absorbed by portraits and the figure, aiming for “accurate observation, created with painterly expressive marks… From time to time I vary my subject matter with a landscape or some equestrian art, but people remain my true obsession.”

At Threadneedles Harriet Brigdale exhibits an art quilt, incorporating images based on drawings of children who visited Standen in the summer of
2013 and using William Morris fabrics.

THE BOOKSHOP

Open: Every day 10.00-17.00. The artist will be in residence most Fridays from 14.00-15.00.

HARRIET BRIGDALE

On Friday afternoons, the artist can be found in The Bookshop, asking visitors of all ages to add to her sketchbook project. Several sketchbooks of drawings will be produced, based on cookery, art history and other themes appearing on the bookshelves.
At times when the artist is not in residence the sketch books will be placed in the bookshop window, presenting a growing record of six months in the life of the town.

HANNAH BUCKLEY

Hannah Buckley exhibits ‘Cutting Through’; a textile piece inspired by medieval maps and local plant forms. Comprising of separate strips of fabric, stitched and appliquéd, the piece is suspended in the atrium of the museum and can be viewed both outside and inside the building. The artist lives in the town and formed Example with other interested artists in 2011.

JUNCTION

Junction’s piece will take up residence in this cafe in the heart of the town. Here people can enjoy and interact with light sources and materials constantly changing and evolving representing East Grinstead’s past, present and future.
The two artists, Nick Blower and Aideen Malone, create work that aims to transcend the boundary between art and design. Working with light, form and architecture, they create sculptures and installations that connect meaning and message.

RENATE WILBRAHAM

Renate Wilbraham exhibits ‘snap shots’ of East Grinstead during the spring and summer of 2013, captured in stitch. These are familiar elements of the town, but from an unusual or unexpected perspective.
A sewing machine is used as a tool, rather than the more conventional pencil.

JACKIE WATKINS

Jackie Watkins works in a figurative manner. The artist created a mythological story relating to East Grinstead and exhibits the centralcharacter as a wire sculpture high up in East Court Mansion. The site specific installation is accompanied by an artist’s book, revealing the folklore through the style of a children’s story book.
The artist lives and works in East Grinstead. She enjoys working with the relatively new media of wire, discovering possibilities for design and structure.

COMMUNITY PROJECT:
EXAMPLE and SACKVILLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Example artists together with 20 young people from Sackville School created this huge permanent art installation in the town subway. ‘Route A22’ incorporates handmade ceramics and sprayed stencils, responding to the theme ‘transport and communication’. Mid Sussex and Community Initiative Fund supported the project, suggested by the town’s youth council. A previously unloved corner of the town transformed! Thanks to the Wallis Centre staff for providing a brilliant ‘pop up’ studio.

HARRIET BRIGDALE

Harriet Brigdale exhibits an art quilt, incorporating images based on drawings of children who visited Standen in the summer of 2013 and using William Morris fabrics. The vegetable garden at Standen provided another source of inspiration.

“I have been drawing and painting from a very small child, I love art, creating it myself or looking at other artists work is important and a great joy to me.”
