Example artists are joining forces with students from Imberhorne and Sackville secondary schools in East Grinstead to make drawings at the local museum. The artists have been invited by curator Jessica Hadfield at East Grinstead Museum to respond to the collection in order to produce an exhibition of contemporary art work in the summer of 2016.

When planning for Townscape 2016, the artists thought it would be great to get really keen art students at each school to ‘mirror’ the project. The town library has kindly offered to show the students’ work in a ‘sister exhibition’.

A ‘Night at the Museum’ was arranged and provided a platform for both artists and students to draw the collection together. Curators were on hand to answer questions about the collection, so that the story behind each chosen artifact could be recorded.

Jessica Hadfield at the Museum had this to say about the project:

“I am delighted to be working with Example on this project to find new ways to use and interpret the Museum’s varied collections. Working with the artists and students, whether they have chosen an item from our Museum Store behind the scenes or an item on display, has provided us with a valuable opportunity to revisit and find new meaning in our collections. Each item the artist has worked with as part of this project will be displayed as part of Townscape 2016 giving us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the item and interpret it in a new light by means of the artist’s response to it.”
